Can You Shower After a Tattoo?
Yes. Showering with a new tattoo is not just allowed but encouraged for hygiene. Wait for the initial wrap to come off, typically 3 to 24 hours after the session. Keep showers short and lukewarm. Avoid direct spray on the tattoo. Use mild fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean towel.
Yes you can shower with a new tattoo and you should. Showering is fundamentally different from baths because the water runs off rather than soaking the tattoo. Brief gentle showering removes plasma, bacteria and sweat from the healing skin which actively helps healing. The first shower is typically 3 to 24 hours after the session once the initial wrap has come off.
Practical guidance. Lukewarm water not hot. Under 10 minutes. Mild fragrance-free soap on the tattoo, washed in with clean hands not loofahs. Let water run over rather than directing the spray at the tattoo. Pat dry with a clean towel or kitchen paper. Apply aftercare cream after the skin has fully dried. Showers throughout the entire healing window are fine. Baths and swimming need to wait 3 to 4 weeks.
Showering is one of the few water-related activities that works well with a new tattoo. The flowing water rinses the wound clean rather than soaking it. This page covers timing, technique and the small mistakes that can cause problems.
The single biggest difference between showering and bathing for tattoos is submersion. Water flow off the tattoo for a few minutes is fine. Water sitting against the tattoo for an extended period is the problem. Showers fall on the right side of that line, baths on the wrong side.
When You Can Shower After a Tattoo
With Standard Cling Film Wrap
Wait until the initial wrap is removed. Typical timing is 3 to 24 hours after leaving the studio depending on the artist guidance and tattoo size. Wash the tattoo with mild fragrance-free soap when the wrap comes off. Showering becomes safe from that first wash onwards.
With Second Skin Adhesive Film
You can shower immediately. Second skin films like Saniderm and Tegaderm are waterproof. Keep showers brief and lukewarm. Do not direct the spray at the film. The water rolls off the film without affecting the tattoo underneath.
With Absorbent Pad Dressing
Wait until the dressing comes off, typically the next day. The pad will become soaked and ineffective if it gets wet. Most artists provide a second pad for overnight wear.
How to Shower With a New Tattoo
Set the Water Temperature
Lukewarm only. Hot water opens pores and can cause ink to seep out before settling. Cold water is uncomfortable but does no harm. Aim for the cooler end of comfortable.
Keep It Short
Under 10 minutes total. Long showers soften scabs prematurely. Get in, wash the tattoo gently, finish your usual shower routine, get out.
Avoid Direct Spray
Position so the water runs over the tattoo rather than hitting it directly. High pressure water can disturb fresh ink in the first few days. If you have a high pressure shower, turn down to a gentler setting or stand at an angle.
Use Mild Fragrance-Free Soap
Mild antibacterial unscented soap. Dove Sensitive, Cetaphil, Hibiscrub or Hustle Bubbles all work well. Avoid heavily fragranced body washes, exfoliating soaps and antibacterial soaps with strong chemicals.
Wash With Clean Hands Only
Never use a loofah, sponge, washcloth or shower puff on a healing tattoo. These harbour bacteria and the abrasive surface damages healing skin. Wash with freshly cleaned hands using gentle circular motions.
Rinse Thoroughly
Make sure all soap residue is rinsed off the tattoo. Trapped soap can irritate healing skin and cause breakouts. Let water flow gently over the tattoo for 30 seconds to clear it.
Pat Dry Gently
Use a clean fresh towel or kitchen paper. Pat the tattoo dry, do not rub. Pay attention to drying around the edges. Leave to air dry for 5 to 10 minutes before applying aftercare cream.
Apply Aftercare After Drying
Once the skin is fully dry, apply a thin layer of your aftercare cream. Bepanthen, Aquaphor or a dedicated tattoo balm in the first week. Fragrance-free body lotion from week 2.
Short Lukewarm Showers
Under 10 minutes. Lukewarm water. Mild fragrance-free soap. Hand washing only no loofahs. Indirect spray. Thorough rinse. Pat dry. Apply aftercare cream after drying. Daily showering throughout healing is encouraged.
This approach actively helps healing by keeping the tattoo clean.
Long Hot Showers or Soaking
Hot water opens pores and can fade ink. Long showers soften scabs prematurely. Direct high pressure spray disturbs healing. Bath submersion soaks the wound. Soap residue not rinsed clean. Loofah use damages skin and carries bacteria.
These cause patchy healing, infection risk and slower recovery.
Showering Timeline
Showering safety by hours and weeks post tattoo
The chart shows when different water activities become appropriate. Showering is fine from wrap removal onwards. Hot showers should be avoided for the first week. Baths and any submersion need 3 to 4 weeks of healing minimum. The key distinction is flowing water versus standing water.
Showering with a new tattoo is not only fine, it is necessary for the sake of good hygiene and tattoo aftercare. Keep showers under 10 minutes. Use lukewarm water. Avoid direct high pressure streams on the tattoo.
Adapted from skincare and tattoo industry guidance
The First Shower After Your Tattoo
The first wash is the most important. Most artists will tell you to take it as the wrap comes off. This typically falls between 3 and 24 hours after the session.
Remove the wrap carefully. If it sticks to the tattoo, soften it with lukewarm water in the shower until it releases. Do not pull dry. Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap. Step into a lukewarm shower. Wet the tattoo gently. Apply a small amount of mild fragrance-free soap to your hand. Wash the tattoo using gentle circular motions to remove any plasma, dried blood or ink residue. Rinse thoroughly. Step out. Pat dry with a clean towel. Air dry for 5 minutes. Apply aftercare cream.
The tattoo may look slightly different after this first wash. Less shiny. The colours may appear slightly faded or hazy. This is normal. Full colour returns as healing completes.
What Causes Problems
Hot Water
Hot water opens pores and can cause fresh ink to seep before it has settled. The result can be slightly faded areas in the healed tattoo. Stick to lukewarm throughout the first week.
Long Soaking
Standing under the shower for 20 minutes is essentially soaking. The flowing water becomes irrelevant if the tattoo is wet for an extended period. Keep showers brief.
Direct High Pressure
Power showers or strong shower heads can disturb fresh ink and dislodge scabs. Stand at an angle or turn the pressure down.
Harsh Products
Strong antibacterial soaps, exfoliating washes, body scrubs and heavily fragranced products all cause irritation. Mild and fragrance-free is the rule for the healing window.
Loofahs and Sponges
Even clean-looking loofahs harbour significant bacteria. The abrasive texture also damages healing skin. Hands only on the tattoo for at least 4 weeks.
Soap Residue
Soap left on the tattoo can cause irritation and breakouts. Rinse thoroughly even when in a hurry.
Drying With Old Towels
Reused or shared towels carry bacteria and lint. Use a fresh clean towel for the tattoo or use clean kitchen paper for the first week.

Showering With Second Skin Film
If your artist used Saniderm, Tegaderm or similar second skin film, you can shower immediately. The film is waterproof and protects the tattoo underneath. Some considerations apply.
Keep showers brief and lukewarm even with the film on. Do not direct high pressure spray at the film as it can lift edges. The film may collect fluid underneath which is normal during healing. If the film starts to leak around the edges or peels off entirely, remove it and switch to standard aftercare. Do not try to reapply.
After the film comes off at day 3 to 5, follow normal showering guidance for the rest of healing.
What If Your Shower Routine Is Different
Twice Daily Showerers
Fine during tattoo healing. Both showers should be brief lukewarm and gentle. Apply aftercare after the morning shower and before bed.
Post-Workout Showerers
Critical to shower immediately after exercise during the first 3 weeks. Get sweat off the tattoo as quickly as possible. Use the same gentle approach.
Gym Shower Users
Avoid public gym showers for the first 2 weeks. Bacterial exposure on healing tattoos is higher in shared facilities. Shower at home where possible.
People Who Like Hot Showers
Tough but necessary adjustment for the first week. Hot water specifically harms fresh ink. Compromise by ending with a brief cool rinse and switching to lukewarm during the active healing window.

Practical Questions That Come Up
Can I Use My Normal Body Wash on a New Tattoo?
Probably not if it is heavily fragranced or has exfoliating ingredients. Switch to a mild fragrance-free option for the tattoo area only during the first 4 weeks. Use your normal product on the rest of your body.
What If My Shampoo Gets on the Tattoo?
Rinse it off thoroughly. A brief contact during a shower is not a problem but do not let shampoo or conditioner sit on the tattoo. Wash hair first, body second to manage product flow.
Can I Have a Hot Shower After 2 Weeks?
Lukewarm to slightly warmer becomes fine from week 2 to 3. Avoid truly hot water until week 4 when the tattoo is fully healed. Heat can still affect the visual settling of ink during the active healing window.
What If My Tattoo Is on a Hard to Reach Area?
Get help if needed. Back tattoos are particularly challenging. A long handled cleansing tool with a fresh disposable cloth wrapped over the head works for self-application. Or ask a partner to help with the first few washes.
