Can You Get a Walk-In Tattoo in Manchester?
Yes. At Shallows we take walk-ins Monday to Saturday from 12pm to 7pm. No appointment needed. Pop in with a design idea, browse the flash sheets. We will then pair you with an available artist.
Walk-in tattoos in Manchester are widely available. Shallows runs walk-ins six days a week with several artists working covering blackwork, fine line, traditional, colour and more. You arrive, chat with our team, get a quote, get paired with an artist, get tattooed.
Walk-ins suit small to medium-sized designs. Larger pieces, sleeves or anything that needs a full custom drawing benefit from booking ahead. Minimum charge usually starts around eighty pounds. Bring photo ID and a design idea or be ready to pick from our flash.
This is one of the most common questions we hear from people walking past the studio in central Manchester. Someone has a free afternoon, a tattoo idea has been sitting in their head for weeks. They want to know if they can just turn up. The answer at Shallows is yes, with a few common-sense notes about what works well as a walk-in and what does not.
The walk-in model has become a cornerstone of how Manchester studios operate. It suits the city. Plenty of foot traffic, plenty of last-minute ideas, plenty of clients who do not want to wait six weeks for a small piece. This page walks through how the process actually works at Shallows, what to expect on the day, what kind of work walk-ins suit best plus how to give yourself the best chance of getting tattooed quickly.
How the Walk-In Process Works at Shallows
You do not need to call ahead but you can if you want to check artist availability or quieter times. The studio is at Whitworth Locke on 74 Princess Street. Walk in any day Monday to Saturday between 12pm and 7pm. Sunday is our day off.
Arrival and Consultation
One of our team will sit down with you for a quick chat. Bring a design idea, a reference image on your phone. A vibe also works and we will help you settle it. You can also browse our flash sheets in studio, which are pre-drawn designs ready to go.
We will look at placement, talk through size. We check the area is suitable. We will also ID you. Bring photo ID. Driving licence, passport or provisional licence all work.
Quote and Artist Pairing
We will give you a quote based on size, complexity and time. Minimum charge usually starts around eighty pounds for a small piece. Pricing is transparent, no hidden extras. We tell you upfront what to expect.
We pair you with the artist whose style fits your design best. Several artists work the studio and each has different strengths. Blackwork, fine line, traditional, colour, illustrative.
If your chosen artist is mid-session when you arrive, we will give you a realistic wait time. The lounge area is comfortable. Plenty of reading material. Some clients pop out for a coffee and come back, which is fine. Manchester has plenty of cafes within five minutes of the studio.
The Tattoo Session Itself
Once you are paired with an artist they will run through the stencil placement with you, give you a chance to check it in the mirror, then tweak if needed. Once you are happy, the actual tattoo begins. A small simple piece can take twenty minutes. A medium piece an hour. Anything larger usually requires a proper booking rather than a walk-in.
We use single-use sterile needles, REACH compliant ink from established European suppliers. The studio is council registered. You will see the equipment unwrapped in front of you. Hygiene is non-negotiable.
What Walk-Ins Suit Best
Walk-in suitability by design type
The principle is simple. If the design can be drawn or stencilled in a few minutes, it is a walk-in. If it needs a full custom drawing session, multiple consultations or a large amount of skin time, book ahead. Both are welcome at Shallows.
Pricing and What to Bring
Walk-in pricing at Shallows starts around eighty pounds minimum for the smallest piece. Most palm-sized walk-ins land between one hundred and two hundred pounds. Sleeves and large pieces are priced by session or by hour and quoted at consultation. There is no charge for the consultation itself.
We are Manchester specialists in walk-in tattoos. You arrive, check in at the front desk, browse flash or share your idea. We then match you with an available artist.

When to Book Ahead Instead
Walk-ins are not always the right choice. Three cases where booking a slot in advance gives a better result. First, large or custom pieces that need design time. The artist may want hours of drawing work before you sit down. Second, work with a specific artist whose calendar fills up weeks ahead. If you have your heart set on a particular Shallows artist, ask when you visit or call and book a slot. Third, group bookings. Friends getting matching tattoos, hen parties, milestone celebrations. Coordinating two or more artists at once is much smoother with notice.
Other Manchester Walk-In Studios
Walk-in tattoos are common across Manchester. The Northern Quarter has several studios that take walk-ins. Outside the city centre, Salford and Trafford have options too. What separates studios is mostly the quality of the artists and the standard of hygiene rather than the walk-in policy itself. Look for council registration, ask about ink brands. Check the artist’s portfolio on Instagram before sitting down.
Thinking It Through Before You Book
If your design is small to medium and you have a free afternoon, just walk in. If it is something larger or more custom, give us a call first and we will book you a proper slot. Our tattoo Manchester page covers booked appointments, pricing for larger work plus how the longer consultation process works for sleeves and back pieces.

Practical Questions That Come Up
Do I Need to Book or Can I Really Just Turn Up?
You can really just turn up. Some afternoons are busier than others so there may be a wait. You will not be turned away unless we are completely fully booked, which is rare. If you want a specific artist, calling ahead helps. If you are flexible on artist, walking in works fine.
What If All the Artists Are Busy?
We will tell you the realistic wait time. Often you can grab a coffee for an hour and come back. If the wait is too long for you, we can book you a slot for later in the week. We never have you waiting longer than necessary.
Can I Bring a Friend?
Yes. The lounge area has seating for one or two guests per client. Larger groups should call ahead because the studio gets cramped if everyone arrives at once. Most clients bring one friend or partner and it works well.
What if I Change My Mind About the Design at the Last Minute?
Up until the stencil is on and you have signed the consent form, you can change your mind. After the stencil goes on you can still tweak placement or size. After the first needle touches your skin, the design is committed. We will never rush you into starting before you are ready.
tattoo preperation guide
Read the Full Guide
Walk-ins are quick and simple but a bit of preparation makes the session smoother. The preperation guide covers what to eat, what to wear, what to expect on the day. Useful even for walk-ins.
Even for a walk-in, a bit of prep helps. Our full tattoo preperation guide covers what to eat beforehand, what to wear, what to bring and how to mentally prepare. Worth a quick read the night before if you are planning to pop in.
The summary. Walk-ins are easy at Shallows. Six days a week, multiple artists, transparent pricing. The only practical limit is the size and complexity of the design. Small and medium work, walk in. Large or fully custom, book a slot. Either way, the door is open.
