Savlon is a UK household name for cuts, grazes and minor wounds. The question for tattoos is whether the antiseptic properties translate well to tattoo healing. The clear answer is no. This page covers why Savlon damages tattoos and which alternatives work better.

The principles. Skip Savlon entirely for fresh tattoos. Antiseptic ingredients too harsh for tattoo ink. Use proper tattoo aftercare products instead.

Why Skip Savlon on Tattoos

Cetrimide Is Too Harsh

Savlon contains cetrimide a quaternary ammonium antiseptic that effectively kills bacteria on cuts. The same harshness damages tattoo ink particles and can pull ink out of healing skin.

Chlorhexidine Issues

Newer Savlon formulations contain chlorhexidine. The antiseptic action is designed for closed wounds not healing tattoos which need gentler care.

Pulls Ink Reports

UK tattoo forums and studio guidance consistently describe Savlon pulling ink from healing tattoos. Visible ink loss and patchy healing reported by clients who used Savlon.

Wrong Product Purpose

Savlon is designed to be applied sparingly to small cuts. Tattoo aftercare requires regular application to a larger area which is different use case.

Drying Effect

Some Savlon formulations have a drying effect on skin. Fresh tattoos need moisture balance not drying.
