Timeline Questions
How long does a piercing actually take to heal?
The realistic timelines: lobes 6 to 8 weeks. Most facial piercings 2 to 4 months. Cartilage piercings 6 to 12 months. Navel and nipple 9 to 12 months. The optimistic numbers online (2 weeks for lobes, 3 months for cartilage) are wrong. Plan for the realistic timeline.
Why is my piercing taking longer than I expected?
You probably read optimistic numbers online. The realistic timelines above are the truth. If you are genuinely past the typical range, audit the common causes: cheap jewellery, sleep pressure, touching habits, harsh products, smoking, poor sleep.
When can I change my jewellery?
Wait until the piercing is fully healed, not just when it feels fine. Lobes 8 weeks minimum. Most facial piercings 2 to 4 months. Cartilage 6 to 9 months. Navel and nipple 9 to 12 months. First change at the studio.
How do I know if my piercing is fully healed?
Comfortable on contact. No fluid produced even when pressed. No crusting at the entry and exit. Stable for at least 2 weeks. The most reliable indicator is a studio check.

Aftercare Questions
What should I use to clean my piercing?
Sterile saline spray only. NeilMed Piercing Aftercare or NeilMed Wound Wash are the standard recommendations. Twice a day, morning and evening. Pat dry with disposable paper.
Should I use tea tree oil on my piercing?
No. Tea tree oil is a common cause of irritation and chemical burns on healing piercings. Despite online recommendations, do not use it.
What about hydrogen peroxide or alcohol?
No. Both damage healing tissue and slow recovery. Sterile saline only.
Should I twist or move the jewellery during cleaning?
No. The old advice to twist jewellery during cleaning has been wrong for years. Twisting tears the developing channel lining. Hands off; saline only.
How often should I clean it?
Twice a day. More than that causes irritation. Less than that allows crusts to accumulate. Twice a day is the sweet spot.
Can I shower normally?
Yes. Let warm water flow over the piercing. Avoid heavy shower gels directly on the piercing for the first weeks. Pat dry with disposable paper afterwards.
What Is Normal Questions
Is it normal for my piercing to be red and swollen?
Yes, mild redness and swelling for the first 2 to 3 weeks is normal. The signs should be stable or fading. Spreading redness, hot hard swelling or severe pain are different and warrant attention.
Is it normal to see yellow crusts?
Yes. Yellow or whitish crusts at the entry and exit are dried lymph fluid. Normal during early healing. Reduces over weeks.
Is it normal for it to itch?
Mild occasional itching during weeks 2 to 4 is normal as part of tissue regeneration. Severe persistent itching suggests allergy.
Is it normal for it to bleed?
Brief bleeding for the first few hours after piercing is normal. Light spotting in the first day is normal. Beyond 24 hours, bleeding is not normal.
Is it normal to have a small bump?
Bumps are common but not normal. They indicate something is irritating the piercing. Identify the cause (jewellery, sleep, touching, products) and remove it.
Is it normal for one side to heal differently than the other?
Some asymmetric healing is normal. Significant differences warrant attention. Sleep pressure often affects one side more than the other.

Concerning Symptoms Questions
How can I tell if my piercing is infected?
True infection produces: severe constant pain, hot hard swelling spreading beyond the piercing, thick green or yellow pus, fever, red streaks moving away from the piercing. Most “infections” clients suspect turn out to be irritation or allergic reactions in disguise.
What should I do if I think it is infected?
See a GP same day if multiple signs are present, particularly fever or red streaks. Do not remove the jewellery unless directed by a medical professional. Continue saline cleaning.
What if I have a bump that will not go away?
Address the likely cause first: cheap jewellery, sleep pressure, touching, harsh products, hair catching. Most bumps fade within 2 to 4 weeks once the cause is removed. If a bump persists despite this, come to the studio for assessment.
What does rejection look like?
The bar visibly moving closer to the skin surface over weeks. Skin over the bar appearing thinner. Less than 1mm of skin covering the jewellery. The original entry and exit points appearing closer together. Take photos over time to spot the changes.
Is my piercing migrating?
Compare to photos from when it healed. If the position has visibly changed, migration is likely. Studio assessment confirms whether the movement is normal settling or developing rejection.
I have a discharge that worries me. What is it?
Clear or slightly yellow lymph fluid is normal. Thick green or yellow pus with foul smell suggests infection. Volume matters; significant ongoing discharge beyond the first weeks needs assessment.

Activity Questions
Can I exercise after a piercing?
Light exercise after 24 to 48 hours for ear and face piercings. Heavy exercise after a week. For body piercings, light exercise after a week and heavy exercise after two weeks. Avoid swimming and contact sports until fully healed.
Can I swim with a new piercing?
No. Skip pools, hot tubs, sea and lakes until fully healed. The water carries bacteria and chemicals that significantly slow healing and increase infection risk.
When can I sleep on it?
For cartilage piercings, protect sleep position for at least 3 to 6 months. For navel and nipple, back sleeping for at least 6 months. After full healing, occasional pressure is fine but consistent direct pressure can still cause issues.
Can I wear headphones?
Standard headphones press on ear cartilage piercings and slow healing. Use bone-conduction headphones (Shokz) during the healing window. Regular headphones can return once fully healed.
Can I have sex with a new genital or nipple piercing?
Skip sexual activity involving the piercing for the first 4 to 6 weeks. After that, use protection (barriers) and gentle approach until fully healed. Specific advice for genital piercings varies; discuss with the piercer.
Can I kiss with a new lip or oral piercing?
Skip for the first week to ten days. Gentle kissing fine after that. Oral activity skip for 4 to 6 weeks. The bacteria exchange and pressure both stress fresh piercings.
Jewellery Questions
What jewellery should I use?
Implant grade titanium (ASTM F136) or solid 14k or higher gold. These are tolerated by almost everyone. Avoid plated jewellery, fashion mixed-metal pieces, sterling silver and lower-grade steel.
Why do I need to use such expensive jewellery?
Quality jewellery is the single biggest factor in clean healing. Cheap jewellery causes ongoing inflammation that produces bumps, slow healing and sometimes rejection. The cost difference is meaningful but the healing difference is dramatic.
Can I use the jewellery I already own?
Only if you can verify it is implant grade titanium or solid 14k+ gold. Most jewellery sold for general fashion does not meet these standards. When in doubt, use the jewellery provided by the studio.
The jewellery feels too long. What should I do?
The initial bar is intentionally longer than the final size to accommodate swelling. Once swelling has settled (usually 4 to 8 weeks), come in for a downsize. This is essential for most piercings.
The jewellery is loose. Is that normal?
Threading can loosen over time. Check threading occasionally and tighten gently if loose. Loose ends eventually come off, so address it before it falls out.
My jewellery fell out. What now?
Wash your hands, find clean replacement jewellery of the same gauge and material, gently attempt reinsertion. If you cannot, come to the studio same day. Channels can close within hours for fresh piercings.
Lifestyle Questions
Can I drink alcohol after a piercing?
Skip alcohol for the first 24 hours. After that, moderate drinking is fine. Heavy drinking through the healing window slows healing.
Can I smoke or vape during healing?
Smoking significantly slows healing, particularly for oral piercings. Vaping is less harmful but still slows oral piercing healing. Reducing or stopping during the healing window helps measurably.
Will diet affect my healing?
Adequate nutrition supports normal healing. Significant deficiencies slow it. Most balanced diets cover the needs. Megadose supplements do not provide additional benefit.
Does stress affect my piercing?
Chronic significant stress can slow healing by 24 to 40 percent in studies. Brief or normal stress does not meaningfully affect healing. Focus on sleep, nutrition and basic wellbeing.
Can I get a piercing if I have a medical condition?
Most medical conditions do not prevent piercings. Well-controlled diabetes, stable autoimmune conditions and most other conditions are fine. Active treatment for cancer, recent transplant or active autoimmune flares are usually not the right time. Discuss with your medical team.
Can I get pierced while pregnant?
Generally not recommended. Hormonal changes affect healing and there are wider considerations. Wait until after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Studio Visit Questions
When should I come back to the studio?
Downsize visit at 4 to 8 weeks for most piercings. Any time you have concerns. For jewellery changes. For any issue not resolving within 2 to 4 weeks of addressing obvious causes.
Do you charge for checks?
Most studios do not charge for assessment of existing piercings. We do not. Walk in any day Monday to Saturday twelve to seven.
Should I come back if I think something is wrong?
Yes. A few minutes of professional assessment definitively answers what is going on. Online research and forum advice rarely substitute. We would rather see you and confirm everything is fine than have you worry for weeks.
What if I cannot come into the studio?
Call or message us with photos. We can give general guidance and tell you whether you need to come in. For suspected serious issues (severe infection, advanced rejection), see a GP same day.
Most healing questions have direct simple answers. The complicated cases are rare. The most useful thing you can do when something worries you is come to the studio for a quick check.

Long-Term Care Questions
What should I do once the piercing is fully healed?
Normal hygiene during showers and face washing. Quality jewellery throughout the life of the piercing. Watch for any changes. The active aftercare routine ends once the piercing is fully healed.
Can I wear cheap jewellery once healed?
Not really. Cartilage piercings particularly continue to react to cheap jewellery for years. Stick with implant grade titanium or solid gold long-term for best results.
Will the piercing last forever?
Standard piercings in suitable anatomy can last decades. Surface piercings have shorter expected lifespans (1 to 5 years). Late rejection happens occasionally. The piercing requires some ongoing awareness even when healed.
What if I want to retire the piercing?
Remove the jewellery and let the channel close over. Continue saline cleaning until the area closes. Some scarring usually remains. The body closes the channel over days to weeks depending on the piercing type.
Can I re-pierce in the same spot?
Sometimes. Recent closures can be re-pierced through the same path. Older closures or rejection scars usually need a slightly different placement. Studio assessment helps decide.
Specific Concern Questions
I touched it accidentally. Have I ruined it?
No. One accidental touch is not a disaster. Wash hands if needed and continue normal care. The hands-off rule is about cumulative habits not individual incidents.
I slept on it. Have I damaged it?
One night of accidental pressure is not catastrophic. Get back to protected sleep position going forward. Repeated nightly pressure is the issue, not occasional accidents.
I went swimming forgetting about my piercing. What now?
Rinse the piercing with sterile saline as soon as possible. Continue normal aftercare. Watch for any concerning changes over the next few weeks. One swim is usually not catastrophic.
I changed jewellery too early. Now there is a bump.
Swap back to a quality piece of the right size. Continue basic aftercare. The bump typically fades within 2 to 4 weeks. Future jewellery changes wait until the full healing window has passed.
I used the wrong product. What should I do?
Stop using it. Resume basic sterile saline only. Any irritation should resolve within a week or two. If symptoms continue, come in for assessment.
The Studio Perspective
What do you wish all clients knew?
The realistic timeline is the truth. Hands off matters. Quality jewellery is worth the cost. Sleep position is the biggest practical lever. Most concerns are addressable. Studio visits are quick and resolve questions.
What is the most common mistake you see?
Using cheap or unsuitable jewellery. The single biggest cause of healing problems we see. Implant grade titanium throughout solves a lot of issues people otherwise struggle with.
What is the most overlooked aftercare element?
Sleep position. Most clients underestimate how much hours of nightly pressure affects cartilage healing. Setting up a travel pillow and protected sleep is one of the highest-impact things you can do.
What is the most common unnecessary worry?
Most clients worry about infection. True infection is uncommon. The much more common issues are normal healing signs being mistaken for problems, or irritation from cheap jewellery being mistaken for infection.
What do you tell clients who are obsessing about their piercing?
Come in for a check. Get the professional opinion. Then set firm rules about how often you check (twice a day for cleaning, no more). The piercing is almost always fine; the worry is the problem.
