Piercing Aftercare Questions Answered

The aftercare questions clients ask most often at our Manchester studio. Sleep, swimming, exercise, jewellery, products, bumps, infection. Direct answers to what everyone actually wants to know.

In short

The questions we hear most often: how often to clean, when to sleep on it, when to swim, when to change jewellery, what to do about bumps, how to tell if it is infected, what about exercise, alcohol and so on. The answers cluster around the same themes: be patient, use quality jewellery, leave it alone, watch for specific warning signs.

This page is the practical FAQ for the healing window, drawn from the questions clients actually ask in person.

The aftercare hub covers each topic in depth. This page collects the direct questions clients ask most often and gives short, practical answers. Use it as a quick reference rather than a deep dive. If you want detail on any one topic, follow the links to the relevant article.

About Cleaning

How Often Should I Clean It?

Once or twice a day. No more. Each cleaning is brief: spray sterile saline, let it sit 30 seconds, pat dry with disposable paper. Over-cleaning is one of the most common causes of irritation.

What Should I Clean It With?

Pre-mixed sterile saline solution from a chemist. NeilMed, Easypiercing, Boots own-brand or Superdrug own-brand all work. Around £5 a bottle, lasts months.

Can I Use Antibacterial Soap?

No. Antibacterial soap dries the surrounding skin and strips helpful bacteria. Use plain unscented soap for hand washing instead. Nothing on the piercing besides sterile saline.

What About in the Shower?

Normal showers are fine. The warm water helps soften crusts. Tip your head so shampoo flows away from ear piercings. Pat the piercing dry with disposable paper after.

Do I Need to Clean Mid-Day?

Generally no. The morning and evening routine covers it. The exception is if you have touched the piercing area or it has been visibly contaminated (sweat after exercise, splashed during a meal). A quick rinse in those cases is sensible.

Yes

Things That Are Fine

Showering. Light exercise after a day. Sleeping on the opposite side. Wearing your normal clothes (with adjustments for navel and nipple). Eating normal food.

No

Things to Avoid

Swimming. Hot tubs. Twisting. Touching repeatedly. Changing jewellery early. Strong perfume near the piercing. Heavy contact sports.

About Sleeping

Can I Sleep on the Piercing?

Not directly. For piercings on one side of the head or face, sleep on the opposite side for the first 3 to 6 months. For cartilage piercings particularly, sleep pressure is the single biggest cause of bumps.

What About Travel Pillows?

Useful. A U-shaped travel pillow with the side rolled into a doughnut shape with a hole over the piercing lets you sleep on the pierced side without pressure. Dedicated piercing pillows cost £20 to £30. Regular travel pillows around £10.

Can I Sleep on My Stomach?

Skip stomach sleeping for face piercings. The face is pressed directly into the pillow which is the worst position for nostril, eyebrow, lip and similar. Back sleeping is the alternative.

What About Navel and Nipple?

Back sleeping is ideal. Side sleeping is fine if you can avoid lying directly on the piercing. Stomach sleeping with a navel piercing is genuinely uncomfortable.

What If I Roll Onto It in My Sleep?

It happens. A single night of accidental pressure is not a disaster. Clean the piercing the next morning, try to get back to protected position the next night. Repeated accidental pressure means the setup needs adjusting.

About Swimming and Water

When Can I Swim?

Not until fully healed. Lobes 6 to 8 weeks. Soft tissue facial 4 to 6 months. Cartilage 6 to 12 months. Navel and nipple 9 to 12 months. No exceptions.

Even Sea or Saltwater Pools?

Yes. Salt does not sterilise water. Marine bacteria and pool chemicals both irritate healing tissue. The no-swimming rule applies to all bodies of water besides showers.

Can I Take a Bath?

Avoid baths if they submerge the piercing. For piercings well above the water line (eyebrow, helix), a careful bath without submerging the head is fine. For navel piercings, no baths until fully healed.

What About Hot Tubs?

The worst option for piercing healing. Warm bacteria-rich water, with chemicals and jets to make it worse. Skip hot tubs for the full healing window and consider skipping them even for years afterwards on bumpy or sensitive piercings.

What If I Genuinely Have to Swim?

Waterproof patches (Tegaderm or 3M Nexcare) can reduce risk somewhat. Keep submersion brief. Stay in a well-maintained chlorinated pool rather than lake or sea. Rinse the piercing with sterile saline immediately after. The patches reduce risk; they do not eliminate it.

About Exercise

When Can I Go Back to the Gym?

Light activity is fine after the first day or two for ear and face piercings. For body piercings (navel, nipple), wait a week. Avoid heavy sweating directly on the piercing for the first week.

What About Contact Sports?

Skip contact sports until fully healed. The risk of trauma to the piercing is too high. Boxing, rugby, martial arts, anything where the piercing area might take an impact.

Yoga and Pilates?

Fine after a few days. Avoid positions that compress the piercing for the first couple of weeks. For navel piercings, lying flat on the stomach is the position to avoid.

Running?

Fine. The motion does not affect most piercings significantly. Sweat is the main consideration, so wipe gently with sterile saline after a sweaty run.

Weights?

Fine after the first day. Avoid heavy bench pressing immediately after fresh nipple or chest piercings. Otherwise normal weight training does not affect piercings.

About Jewellery

When Can I Change the Jewellery?

Once the piercing is fully healed, not just when it feels fine. Lobes 8 weeks. Most soft tissue 2 to 4 months. Cartilage 6 to 9 months. Navel and nipple 9 to 12 months.

Can I Just Swap It Myself?

For lobes once fully healed, yes if you are comfortable with the technique. For other piercings, first change in studio is recommended. After that, you can swap yourself if confident.

What If a Ball or End Comes Off?

Pop into the studio. We can replace the missing piece and check the threading. Trying to refit it yourself can cross-thread the piece or introduce contamination.

Can I Wear Other Jewellery Once Healed?

Yes, within the right material. Implant grade titanium and solid 14k+ gold are the safest. Niobium is fine. Sterling silver works for some people but not others. Avoid plated jewellery.

What If My Jewellery Falls Out?

Try to keep the channel open with a clean piece of jewellery or a smooth retainer. Come to the studio same day if possible. Lobes can close within hours. Cartilage and other piercings can close within days.

About Bumps and Healing Concerns

Why Do I Have a Bump?

Almost always irritation, not rejection. Common causes: cheap jewellery, sleep pressure, knocking it on clothing, touching it repeatedly, harsh products, the wrong gauge or length of bar.

How Do I Get Rid of a Bump?

Identify and remove the cause. Switch to titanium jewellery if you are wearing fashion pieces. Change sleeping position. Stop touching. Simplify aftercare. The bump usually fades within a few weeks.

Should I Use Tea Tree Oil on a Bump?

No. Tea tree oil is an irritant that often makes bumps worse rather than better. Address the underlying cause instead.

What If the Bump Does Not Go Away?

Come to the studio for a check. Persistent bumps usually have a specific cause we can identify. May need a jewellery change, a small adjustment to placement or further investigation.

How Do I Tell If It Is Infected?

True infection has specific signs: significantly increasing pain, hot hard swelling, thick green or yellow pus, red streaks moving away from the piercing, fever or feeling generally unwell. Detail in normal vs warning signs.

Come In With Questions

If you have a specific question about your piercing, pop in. A two minute look from a piercer answers most questions immediately. Walk in any day Monday to Saturday twelve to seven.

About Daily Life

Can I Wear Makeup?

Not in the immediate area for the first 3 to 4 weeks. Apply makeup to the rest of your face as normal. Leave a roughly 1 cm exclusion zone around the piercing. Detail in makeup and piercings.

Can I Use Skincare?

Hyaluronic acid and gentle moisturisers can return within 2 to 3 weeks. Skip retinoids, acids and vitamin C serums on the piercing area for at least 6 weeks. Once fully healed, normal routine returns.

Can I Use Perfume?

Skip applying perfume near a fresh piercing. Wrists, back of neck or inner elbows are fine.

Can I Dye My Hair?

Better to wait until the piercing is fully healed. If you cannot wait, take particular care to keep dye well away from the piercing area.

Can I Drink Alcohol?

Skip alcohol for 24 hours after the piercing. After that, moderate drinking is fine. Heavy drinking during the healing window slows the timeline.

Can I Smoke?

Smoking slows healing significantly, particularly for oral piercings. The healing window can run weeks longer for smokers. Not realistic to ask people to quit for a piercing but the impact is real.

About the Timeline

How Long Until It Heals?

The realistic numbers: lobes 6 to 8 weeks, soft tissue facial 4 to 6 months, cartilage 6 to 12 months, navel and nipple 9 to 12 months. The piercing feels fine well before it is actually fully healed.

How Do I Know It Is Healed?

No tenderness on contact. No crusting. No occasional fluid. Comfortable to change jewellery. Comfortable to swim (in theory, after the appropriate timeline). Come in for a check to confirm.

Why Is My Piercing Healing Slowly?

Common reasons: cheap jewellery, twisting habits, sleep pressure, over-cleaning, smoking, knocking it on clothing or hair, certain health conditions. Identify what is happening and adjust.

Can I Speed Up Healing?

Yes, somewhat. Quality jewellery, minimal interference, protected sleep, hydration, good sleep, no smoking, gentle saline cleaning. Detail in heal faster.

About Practical Situations

What If I Get Sick?

Mild illness (cold, mild flu) does not directly affect healing. Significant illness with fever or major immune impact can slow healing temporarily. Resume normal routine once recovered.

What About Dental Work?

For oral piercings specifically, mention to your dentist that you have the piercing. They may need to remove jewellery temporarily for some procedures. The piercing can be reinserted afterwards if recent enough.

What If I Have a Medical Procedure?

Most medical procedures do not require removing piercing jewellery. For MRI scans, some jewellery types need removal. Check with the medical team in advance.

What About Air Travel?

Piercings do not affect air travel. The metal in piercing jewellery is too small to trigger airport security. Normal pressure changes do not affect healed or healing piercings.

Can I Get Pregnant With Piercings?

Yes. Most piercings are unaffected by pregnancy. Navel piercings often need to come out in the third trimester as the navel stretches. Nipple piercings can complicate breastfeeding for some women, so worth discussing with a midwife.

The questions we hear are usually the same questions, asked in slightly different ways. The answers cluster around the same themes. Be patient, use quality jewellery, leave it alone, watch for specific warning signs. The rest looks after itself.

About Discontinuing

What If I Decide I Do Not Want the Piercing Anymore?

Take the jewellery out. Most piercings close within days to weeks once jewellery is removed. Lobes can leave a small mark. Cartilage may leave a small dot. Most piercings heal back to nearly invisible.

How Long Before a Piercing Closes?

Fresh piercings can close within hours. Healing piercings within days. Mature piercings (years old) within weeks. The narrower the piercing has become, the faster it closes when jewellery is removed.

What If I Take It Out and Want It Back?

Come into the studio. If the channel has not fully closed, we can usually re-insert jewellery without a full re-piercing. If it has closed, re-piercing through the same path is usually faster and less painful than a fresh location.

About Aftercare Products

What Should I Buy?

Pre-mixed sterile saline solution. Disposable paper towels. Plain unscented soap. For oral piercings, alcohol-free antibacterial mouthwash. Optional travel pillow for ear piercings. Total cost £10 to £35 for the full healing window.

What Should I Skip?

Antibacterial creams, tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol wipes, witch hazel, aloe vera, coconut oil, vaseline, home-mixed sea salt, healing sprays beyond plain saline, special healing supplements.

Is NeilMed Worth It?

It is one of the best sterile saline products available. The price is reasonable for the duration. Pharmacy own-brand sterile saline works equally well and may cost less.

Do I Need to Buy Anything Special From the Studio?

Not necessarily. Most studios sell sterile saline alongside the piercing, which is convenient but not essential. You can pick up the same product or equivalent from any chemist.

The Pattern in the Answers

If you read through the answers above and notice a pattern, you are seeing the underlying principle of modern piercing aftercare. The same themes recur. Be patient. Use quality jewellery. Keep it clean with sterile saline. Hands off. Watch for specific warning signs. Wait the realistic timeline.

The complexity that older aftercare advice introduced is gone. What remains is genuinely simple, and the simplicity is the right answer for the vast majority of piercings. If you find yourself doing more than the simple routine, you are probably doing too much.

Most aftercare questions cluster around the same handful of themes. Sleep, swimming, jewellery, bumps, infection signs, exercise, daily life. The answers are mostly the same simple advice applied to slightly different situations. Be patient, leave the piercing alone, watch for warning signs, come in if anything genuinely worries you. The rest looks after itself.
