What to Wear When Getting a Tattoo

Clothing depends on placement. Forearm wants a loose tank or tee. Back wants a button-down worn backwards. Chest wants a low-cut top. Hip wants a wrap skirt or bikini bottoms. Universal rules. Loose, dark, old clothes you do not mind getting marked. Bring a hoodie for warmth.

In short

What you wear to a tattoo session is more practical than fashion. The right outfit gives the artist clean access to the working area, keeps you covered and comfortable through hours of sitting. Plus it accepts the reality that ink stains can happen. Most first timers overthink the fashion and underthink the access. Get the access right and the rest follows.

The three universal rules. Loose comfortable clothes you can sit in for hours. Dark colours because ink stains. Old clothes you do not mind getting marked. Beyond that the specifics depend on placement. Forearm and shoulder are easy. Back and chest need more thought. Hip, thigh and intimate placements need planning around coverage. Bring a hoodie regardless of placement because studio temperature swings.

The clothing question feels minor but actually matters. The wrong outfit slows the session and creates awkward moments when the artist needs access to areas your clothes cover. The right outfit lets the session run smoothly with you covered and comfortable.

This page covers what to wear for each common placement. Plus universal rules that apply regardless. Plus what not to wear. Plus practical tips around intimate or sensitive placements.

The Three Universal Rules

Loose and Comfortable

Tattoo sessions involve sitting or lying in the same position for 30 minutes to several hours. Tight clothing restricts movement and circulation. It also leaves marks on the skin that can interfere with stencilling. Loose comfortable clothes are the only sensible option.

Dark Colours

Tattooing produces small amounts of ink splatter, plasma and capillary blood. These can stain light-coloured fabric. Dark clothes hide any marks completely. Black, navy, dark grey, dark green are all safe choices.

Old Clothes You Do Not Mind

Even with dark colours, do not wear clothes you would be heartbroken to lose. The studio is clean but tattooing is a wet process and accidents happen. Wear clothes that are comfortable and washable. Save the special outfits for after the session.

Easy placements

Forearm Shoulder Calf

These placements are simplest because regular clothing gives natural access. Loose tank top or t-shirt for arm work. Shorts or loose trousers that roll up for leg work. No special wardrobe needed. Most clients have suitable clothes already.

Pick the comfiest old version of these clothes you have. Done.

Plan ahead

Back Chest Hip Thigh Intimate

These placements need more thought because access conflicts with coverage. A button-down shirt worn backwards works for backs. Low-cut tops or button-downs work for chest. Wrap skirts or bikini bottoms work for hip and intimate areas. Most artists offer privacy screens for sensitive placements.

Plan the outfit specifically. Do not just turn up in whatever you wear daily.

By Placement

Forearm and Upper Arm

Loose tank top, vest or short-sleeved t-shirt. Easy to roll up or expose the arm without removing the top. Spaghetti straps work for shoulder tattoos because the strap can be slipped down. For sleeve work covering the whole arm, an oversized t-shirt or a vest gives access from shoulder to wrist.

Back and Upper Back

The pro tip. Wear a button-down shirt backwards. Buttons at the back, opening at the front. You stay covered at the front while the artist has complete access to your back. Alternatively a baggy zip-up hoodie worn open with the back exposed works for upper back. Sports bras can stay on for shoulder blade work then untie or remove for full back access.

Lower Back

Loose trousers or joggers with an elastic waistband that can be pulled down slightly. Combined with a short top or a button-down worn open. Avoid jeans or anything with a stiff waistband.

Chest and Sternum

For men, often easiest to remove the top entirely if comfortable. For women and anyone wanting coverage, a low-cut top, bandeau, tube top or strapless bra works. Spaghetti strap tops with straps that can be slipped down also work. Bring nipple covers or pasties if extra coverage is needed.

Ribs and Side

Tank top that can be rolled up and held in place. Button-down shirt that can be partially opened. Loose t-shirt worn cropped or pulled up. The tricky part is keeping the top still while the artist works because rib placements need a steady working surface.

Stomach

Loose t-shirt that can be rolled up and tucked into a sports bra. Crop top that gives full stomach access. Loose trousers with low waistband. Easier than ribs because the working surface is flatter and the artist can position you more easily.

Hip and Upper Thigh

The most tricky placement for coverage. Options include wrap skirts with slits, loose long skirts pulled up, comfortable underwear with a sarong for additional coverage, bikini bottoms or string-tie bottoms. Most artists offer privacy screens. Some clients bring a small towel or wrap for additional coverage during the session.

Thigh and Knee

Loose shorts or workout shorts that can be pulled up past the working area. Skirts that lift easily. For high thigh, the same options as hip placement. Avoid stiff jeans or tight leggings because they restrict access and feel uncomfortable when rolled up tight.

Calf and Shin

Shorts work best. Loose trousers that roll up past the knee can work but watch the cuff because tight roll-ups cut circulation. PJ bottoms or loose joggers are good options. Sweatpants with elastic ankles are not ideal because the elastic restricts movement.

Ankle and Foot

Flip flops, sandals or shoes you can remove easily. Avoid tall socks, boots or trainers that need to be put back on a fresh tattoo. Wear shoes that give the foot space to breathe afterwards. Many clients book foot tattoos in summer so they can wear open footwear on the journey home.

Neck and Shoulder

Low-neck tops, vests or anything that exposes the collar area. Hair tied back if it is long. For back of neck tattoos, hair pulled up high.

Ask yourself before the session. Do I mind if I get tattoo ink on this? Is it loose enough to roll out of the way whilst keeping me covered up? Can I sit for hours like this without feeling uncomfortable, self conscious or cold?

Universal Extras

Bring a Hoodie

Studio temperature varies and your body temperature can swing during the session. Adrenaline, stress and shock can all cause cold flushes. A hoodie or warm layer is essential even in summer. Easier to take off than to be cold for hours.

Hair Tied Back

If you have long hair, bring a hair tie. The artist needs the working area free of hair. This applies to back of neck, shoulder, upper back and any placement near the head.

Remove Jewellery From the Working Area

Watches, bracelets, necklaces and rings near the planned tattoo area get in the way. Remove them before the session. Bring a small bag to keep them in.

Soft Comfortable Bra If Wearing One

Wired bras leave imprints on the skin that interfere with stencilling. Sports bras and bralettes work better for chest, back and rib placements. Avoid metal fastenings near the working area.

Spare Clothes for After

For sessions with bandaging or aftercare wraps, bring slightly looser clothes than you arrived in. Tight clothes against a fresh tattoo wrap is uncomfortable for the journey home.

What Not to Wear

Tight Restrictive Clothing

Skinny jeans for leg tattoos. Compression tops for chest tattoos. Tight bras for back tattoos. Anything that restricts access or leaves marks on the skin is wrong.

Light Colours You Care About

White, cream and pastel clothes you would be sad to stain. Ink splashes happen. Save them for another day.

Heavy Perfume or Scented Lotion

Skip these on the day. Strong scents linger near the working area and can affect the artist’s focus. Other clients in the studio may share your space.

Anything That Needs Ironing Afterwards

Linen shirts that crumple. Silk blouses. Anything you would normally hang carefully. These will get crushed sitting for hours.

Tall Boots or Trainers for Foot Tattoos

Once the foot is tattooed and wrapped, you cannot put a closed shoe on it. Wear open sandals or flip flops you can leave the studio in.

New Clothes You Have Not Worn Before

New clothes can shed dye that stains skin near the working area. Wash new clothes before wearing them to a tattoo appointment. Or just wear something that has been washed several times.

For Intimate Placements

Hip, upper thigh, ribcage near breast tissue, under-breast, lower abdomen close to underwear line. These placements need coverage planning and most studios offer privacy screens. Tell the artist at consultation what your comfort preferences are. They will adjust the setup to maintain dignity through the session.

Bring a sarong, wrap or large scarf for additional coverage if needed. Bikini bottoms or comfortable underwear that can be partially moved out of the way. For chest placements near nipples, pasties or nipple covers maintain coverage if the top needs to come off.

None of this should feel awkward. Professional artists handle intimate placements daily and approach them with the same focus as any other placement. Speak up about your preferences and they will accommodate.

Thinking It Through Before You Book

Decide your outfit the day before based on placement. Lay it out with the rest of your pack. Test that you can sit comfortably in it for an hour to confirm it works. Bring a hoodie. Bring a hair tie if needed. Bring slightly looser spare clothes for after if the tattoo will be bandaged. Our tattoo Manchester page covers booking and we can advise on specific clothing suggestions at consultation for your placement.

Practical Questions That Come Up

What If My Clothes Get Ink on Them?

Soak immediately in cold water and treat with stain remover before washing. Tattoo ink can come out of most fabrics if treated quickly. This is why dark colours and old clothes are recommended though. Saves the laundry stress.

Can I Just Take Off the Affected Clothing?

Yes for any placement where you are comfortable. Studios provide disposable drapes for partial coverage. Privacy screens for full coverage when you change. Many clients prefer to undress to the relevant area and wrap a towel around the rest.

What If My Outfit Does Not Work When I Arrive?

Most studios have spare disposable drapes or can give you guidance to adapt what you are wearing. The artist will not refuse the session over clothing choice but it can slow things down. Better to plan ahead.

Should I Wear Underwear for Hip and Intimate Placements?

Yes always. Comfortable underwear that can be partially moved out of the way works best. Avoid lace or anything that would catch on the working area. Plain cotton briefs or simple bikini bottoms are ideal.
