simplest version · what to actually do
Piercing Aftercare Made Easy
The simplest possible version of piercing aftercare. One product, two cleanings a day, hands off the rest of the time. The whole routine that produces the fastest cleanest healing.
The whole aftercare routine fits on a postcard. Buy a bottle of pre-mixed sterile saline solution. Spray the piercing twice a day. Pat dry with a disposable paper towel. Wash your hands before any contact. Sleep on the opposite side for piercings on the head or face. Do not touch the jewellery between cleanings. Wait the realistic healing window before changing jewellery or swimming.
That is it. Everything else (twisting, salt soaks, antibacterial cream, healing sprays, special supplements) makes things worse rather than better. The simple version is the right version.
The detailed aftercare hub covers everything in depth. This page is the simplest possible version, written for people who want the rule book on a single page without searching through specialist topics. Print this, stick it on the bathroom mirror and follow it for the healing window.
The Daily Routine
Step 1: Wash Your Hands
Before any contact with the piercing. Plain unscented soap for 20 seconds. Dry on disposable paper.
Step 2: Spray Sterile Saline
Once or twice a day. Aim the spray at the piercing for two or three seconds. Let it sit on the skin for 30 seconds.
Step 3: Pat Dry
Disposable paper towel. Pat the area gently. Do not rub. Do not use a fabric towel.
Step 4: Hands Off
Between cleanings, do not touch the piercing at all. Do not twist the jewellery. Do not pick crusts. Do not check how tender it feels by pressing it.
That is the daily routine. Four steps, two minutes per cleaning. Twice a day at most.
The Whole List
Sterile saline twice a day. Hands off otherwise. Quality jewellery. Protected sleep position. Wait the full healing window.
The Avoid List
Twist the jewellery. Use sea salt soaks. Apply ointments. Pick crusts. Swim. Change jewellery early. Touch the piercing. Use antibacterial soap on it.
The Five Wider Rules
Rule 1: Quality Jewellery From Day One
Implant grade titanium or solid 14k gold. Nothing else for fresh piercings. The jewellery you walk out of the studio with is the jewellery that stays in for the entire healing window. Cheap or plated jewellery is the single biggest cause of healing problems.
Rule 2: Protected Sleep Position
For piercings on one side of the head or face, sleep on the opposite side. For navel and nipple piercings, back sleeping or careful side sleeping. A travel pillow with a hole over the piercing is useful for ear piercings. Sleep pressure is the single biggest cause of bumps in cartilage piercings.
Rule 3: No Swimming Until Fully Healed
No pools, hot tubs, lakes or sea. Showers are fine. Baths are fine if the piercing is not submerged. The healing window depends on the piercing: 6 to 8 weeks for lobes, 4 to 6 months for soft tissue, 6 to 12 months for cartilage, 9 to 12 months for navel and nipple.
Rule 4: No Jewellery Changes Until Healed
The piercing might feel fine within weeks but the internal channel takes much longer. Wait the realistic window before changing jewellery. Lobes 8 weeks. Most soft tissue 2 to 4 months. Cartilage 6 to 9 months. Navel and nipple 9 to 12 months.
Rule 5: Patience
The most underrated rule. The clients who heal fastest are the ones who wait. The clients who try to speed it up or “help” the piercing along by doing more usually slow it down. Trust the body, follow the simple routine, leave the piercing alone.
What You Need to Buy
The complete shopping list for the entire healing window:
- One bottle of pre-mixed sterile saline solution (NeilMed, Easypiercing or pharmacy own-brand). Cost: roughly £5. Lasts roughly 3 months.
- A pack of disposable paper towels or kitchen roll. Cost: a couple of pounds.
- Plain unscented hand soap. Probably already in your bathroom.
- For oral piercings: an alcohol-free antibacterial mouthwash. Cost: roughly £5.
- Optional: a travel pillow with a hole for ear piercings. Cost: £10 to £30.
Total cost for the full healing window: around £10 to £35 depending on piercing type. Cheaper than most other aspects of getting a piercing.
What to Skip Entirely
- Sudocrem, Savlon, Bactroban or any antibacterial ointment
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Rubbing alcohol or alcohol wipes
- Tea tree oil
- Witch hazel
- Aloe vera
- Coconut oil
- Vaseline
- Honey
- Lemon juice
- Apple cider vinegar
- Home-mixed sea salt water
- Antibacterial soap on the piercing

None of these helps. Several actively slow healing or cause problems. The simple bottle of sterile saline does everything you need.

What to Watch For
Normal Signs
Mild redness, some swelling, tenderness when touched, clear or yellowish fluid that forms small crusts, warmth around the area for the first few days. All normal during the first few weeks. The trajectory should be towards normal rather than away from it.
Warning Signs
Significantly increasing pain or redness, hot hard swelling, thick green or yellow pus, red streaks moving away from the piercing, fever or feeling generally unwell. These need a GP visit. Detail in normal vs warning signs.
The Time Test
Normal healing produces signs that fade over days to weeks. Warning signs intensify rather than fade. If something is getting worse rather than better, treat it as a warning sign and seek attention.
Specific Adjustments by Piercing
The basic routine applies to all piercings. A few have specific extras.
Oral Piercings (Tongue, Lip, Labret, Smiley)
Add alcohol-free antibacterial mouthwash after eating, drinking anything that is not water and brushing teeth. Dilute the mouthwash to half strength. Cold drinks help with initial swelling.
Stretched Lobes
Different aftercare. Oil massages once or twice a week with jojoba oil. Detail in ear stretching aftercare.
Navel Piercings
Particularly sensitive to clothing pressure. Wear loose-waisted clothing for the first few weeks. Avoid lying on your stomach during healing.
Nipple Piercings
Avoid underwired bras. Sleep on your back. Be careful with high-pressure shower jets aimed at the area.
Tongue Piercings
Cold drinks, ice and soft food for the first few days. The bar will be longer than the final size to accommodate swelling and will be downsized after about 4 weeks.

Book a Piercing
Every piercing at Shallows comes with the simple routine, written down on a card. Walk in any day Monday to Saturday twelve to seven.
Why the Simple Version Works
Modern professional aftercare has settled on the simple routine because it produces the best outcomes across the widest range of clients. The complexity that older aftercare routines introduced (multiple products, regular twisting, frequent cleanings) was based on outdated wound care understanding and produced more problems than it solved.
The body has been healing piercings for thousands of years. The modern professional contribution is mainly in getting out of the way: quality jewellery, gentle cleaning, minimal interference. The simple routine reflects this principle.
Common Questions in Brief
Can I Shower?
Yes. Normal showers are fine and the warm water helps soften crusts. Tip your head so shampoo runs away from ear piercings. Pat the piercing dry with paper towel after.
Can I Exercise?
Light exercise after the first day or two for ear and face piercings. Wait a week for body piercings. Avoid anything that involves heavy sweating directly on the piercing.
Can I Drink Alcohol?
Skip for 24 hours after the piercing. After that, moderate drinking is fine. Heavy drinking during the healing window slows the timeline.
Can I Sleep On It?
No, not for the first 3 to 6 months for cartilage and longer for navel and nipple. Sleep on the opposite side or use a travel pillow with a hole.
What If a Bump Appears?
Identify the cause (cheap jewellery, sleep pressure, touching, harsh products) and remove it. The bump usually fades within a few weeks. Come into the studio if it does not.
When Can I Change the Jewellery?
Once the piercing is fully healed, not just when it feels fine. Lobes 8 weeks. Most facial 2 to 4 months. Cartilage 6 to 9 months. Navel and nipple 9 to 12 months. Come in for the change and let the piercer assess whether the channel is ready.
Piercing aftercare is one of those areas where less really is more. The clients who follow the simple routine consistently heal cleaner and faster than the clients who add extra products and steps. Simple wins.

The Single Habit That Matters Most
If you cannot remember everything on this page, remember this: do not touch the jewellery. Hands off is the entire technique. Every touch introduces bacteria, drags at healing tissue or both. The piercing heals fastest when ignored.
The cleaning routine is small. The hands-off principle is the wider rule. Build the habit early, accept that the piercing is in the body’s hands, and the healing window passes more easily than expected.

Back to the Hub
This is the short version. The aftercare hub covers each topic in greater depth, along with the wider topics of healing, jewellery, swimming and the practical care.
One Page, Whole Routine
The whole aftercare routine fits on a single page because the routine is genuinely that simple. Sterile saline twice a day. Hands off otherwise. Quality jewellery. Realistic patience. Specific extras for oral and stretched ear piercings. Watch for the warning signs.
If you are following this page and the piercing is not progressing well, come into the studio. We will check the jewellery, assess the situation and adjust if needed. The simple routine works for almost every piercing, and the exceptions are usually fixable with a small adjustment.
Piercing aftercare is shorter than the internet makes it sound. One product, two cleans a day, hands off the rest of the time. Quality jewellery and patient timeline cover the rest. Follow the simple routine, ignore the complicated ones and the piercing has every chance of clean, fast healing.
