The First Days

The Following Days

The Weeks That Follow

The Specific Cells Involved
Neutrophils

Macrophages

Lymphocytes (T Cells and B Cells)

Prioritise Sleep
7 to 9 hours per night. Consistent bedtime. Dark room. Limited screens before sleep. The boring sleep hygiene rules genuinely matter for immune function.
Eat Reasonably
Balanced diet with adequate protein, vegetables, fruit and whole grains. Not the time for restrictive diets.
Stay Hydrated
2 litres of fluid per day. Supports blood circulation which delivers immune cells to the piercing.
Moderate Exercise
Regular movement supports immune function. Avoid extreme training during healing because exhaustive exercise can briefly suppress immunity.
Limit Alcohol
Moderate intake (a few drinks a week) is fine. Heavy drinking suppresses immunity.
Manage Stress
If chronic stress is affecting your life, addressing it helps both general health and healing.
Avoid Smoking
If you smoke and want a piercing to heal well, this is the lever with the biggest impact you can pull.
What Does Not Help
“Immune Boosting” Supplements
The marketing claims that specific products boost immunity. The reality is that most supplements provide standard nutrients you would get from food. They do not boost immunity beyond healthy baseline.
Echinacea
Marketed as immune support. Evidence for general immune benefit is weak. No specific piercing healing benefit.
Vitamin C Megadoses
Beyond adequate intake, more vitamin C does not boost immunity. Causes stomach upset at high doses. Skip the megadosing.
Cold and Flu Supplements
Zinc lozenges, vitamin combinations marketed for cold symptoms. Weak evidence for the marketed effects. Not relevant to piercing healing.
Probiotics
Useful for gut health in some contexts. Marketing around general immune support is largely unsupported. Not specifically beneficial for piercing healing.
Manuka Honey Internally
Promoted as having antibacterial and immune properties. The evidence for general health benefit is weak. The cost is high. Skip it as a piercing intervention.

Diabetes
Well-controlled diabetes (HbA1c in target range) does not significantly affect piercing healing. Uncontrolled diabetes impairs healing and increases infection risk. Get diabetes well controlled before getting pierced.
Autoimmune Conditions
Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and psoriasis can affect healing depending on disease activity and treatment. Active disease and immunosuppressive treatment both slow healing. Discuss with your rheumatologist and piercer.
HIV
Well-controlled HIV with normal CD4 counts does not significantly affect piercing healing. Discuss with your HIV team if you are unsure about your immune status.
Cancer Treatment
Active chemotherapy or radiotherapy significantly affects immune function. Skip new piercings during active treatment. Existing piercings should be assessed for whether to keep or remove during treatment.
Organ Transplant
Immunosuppressive medications after transplant affect healing significantly. Discuss with your transplant team before piercings.
Pregnancy
Hormonal changes during pregnancy affect immune function and healing. Not the ideal time for new piercings. Existing healing piercings may need extra patience.
Coeliac and Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Can affect nutrient absorption and immune function. Well-controlled disease usually does not significantly affect healing.
Vaccines and Piercings
A specific question that comes up. Vaccines work with the immune system but do not significantly affect ongoing piercing healing.
Should You Get Vaccinated During Piercing Healing?
Yes, if vaccines are recommended for you. The brief immune response to vaccination does not affect piercing healing in any meaningful way.
Should You Get a Piercing Just After Vaccination?
Wait a day or two if possible just to ensure any vaccine side effects (mild fever, fatigue) have passed. Otherwise no problem.
Tetanus
Worth checking your tetanus vaccination status before getting pierced if you have not had a booster in 10 years. Most reputable studios use sterile equipment that makes tetanus risk very low, but currency on the vaccine is reasonable hygiene.
Common Illnesses and Healing
Cold or Flu
Mild illness during piercing healing slows the process slightly. The body is using immune resources to fight the illness. Healing typically resumes normal pace within a week of recovery.
Throat Infection
For oral piercings particularly, throat infection during healing can complicate things. May warrant a studio check.
Gastroenteritis
Brief illness does not significantly affect piercing healing. Severe dehydration from prolonged gastroenteritis can.
UTI
Local infection elsewhere does not significantly affect piercing healing. Treating the UTI is the priority.
Chronic Infections
