The Identification Trick

How to Manage an Allergic Reaction

Step 1: Identify the Likely Allergen

If the current jewellery is plated, fashion-quality, sterling silver, lower-grade steel or anything you cannot verify, the metal is likely the cause.

Step 2: Swap to Implant Grade Titanium

The single most effective intervention. Implant grade titanium (ASTM F136 or similar certification) is nickel-free and tolerated by almost everyone, including people with significant nickel sensitivity.

Step 3: Come to the Studio for the Swap

The first jewellery change in a piercing showing allergic symptoms is best done by a piercer. The piercer can assess whether the piercing is in good enough condition for the change and select an appropriate replacement piece.

Step 4: Continue Basic Aftercare

Sterile saline twice a day. Hands off otherwise. Standard routine.

Step 5: Watch for Improvement

Most allergic reactions improve significantly within 1 to 2 weeks of the swap to titanium. Itching reduces, redness fades, bumps shrink.

Step 6: If Not Improving

Other Allergens

Latex

Some clients are allergic to latex used in some examination gloves. Most piercing studios use nitrile gloves to avoid this. Mention latex allergy before the piercing if relevant.

Topical Anaesthetics

Rare but possible. Lidocaine and benzocaine in numbing creams can cause reactions in sensitive people. Test patch a small amount on the inner forearm before applying near a piercing if you have not used the product before.

Cleaning Products

Some clients react to specific antibacterial products. The standard sterile saline causes reactions extremely rarely.

Skincare Products Near the Piercing

Fragrances, preservatives and active ingredients in skincare can cause contact dermatitis around the piercing area. Plain unscented products are safer during healing.

Other Metals

Less common than nickel. Some people react to chromium, cobalt or copper, all of which can be present in alloys. Implant grade titanium and solid 14k+ gold are nearly always tolerated by people sensitive to these metals.

Materials That Are Safe for Most Allergies

Implant Grade Titanium (ASTM F136)

The safest option for people with metal sensitivities. Nickel-free, chromium-free, biocompatible. Tolerated by almost everyone.

Solid 14k or Higher Gold

Below 14k, gold alloys may contain enough nickel to cause reactions. 14k and higher solid gold is generally safe. Avoid plated gold.

Niobium

Hypoallergenic metal similar to titanium. Less common than titanium but equally well tolerated.

Solid Platinum

What Severe Looks Like

Widespread rash extending well beyond the piercing area. Severe itching that interferes with daily life. Visible swelling of the area or surrounding tissue. Possibly hives or systemic symptoms.

What to Do

Remove the suspected jewellery (in this specific case, removal is appropriate because the metal itself is the problem). See a GP. Antihistamines may help symptoms while the reaction settles.

Anaphylaxis

Extremely rare from piercing jewellery. If you experience breathing difficulties, facial swelling, dizziness or other systemic anaphylactic symptoms, call emergency services immediately. This is a medical emergency.

Long-Term Considerations

Nickel Sensitivity Can Worsen

Continued exposure to nickel can intensify sensitivity over time. A mild nickel reaction now may become a strong one in years to come. Switching to titanium permanently is the right approach.
